Different weapons have different extended animations and do a lot more damage than the literal "stab in the back" in ds1 or 3. For example a spear or halberd raises the enemy In The air then pins them to the ground. A great hammer knocks their knees out and ground pounds them. Even a regular longsword does a flurry of blows from multiple angles.

Pvp in dark souls 2 in my opinion is the best out of the series, everything pretty much functioned exactly how it should, the only issue it ran into was the prevalence of slightly op meta builds. I would actually say that I enjoyed Dark souls 1 pvp the least, it was still fun but it was a little too "janky" in some aspects, back stabs being one
No better way to ruin combat than being backstabbed. Even if you roll away you still get teleported back to be stabbed. Heck I even jumped off a cliff once and still got teleported back even after I hit the ground. And I don't want to talk about the people that backstab you when your facing directly in front of them. Will admit not as broken as compared to Dark Souls 1. I just think it should
Doing this would also probably warrant backstabs doing more damage, because otherwise it'd make more sense to just do your normal preferred weapon combo into an enemy's back. So basically a nerf to direct 1v1 battle backstabs, a buff to stealth/surprise backstabs, and a nerf to running away.
